Tamara, Tabby and HyperPay in Odoo: online, on invoices and at the point of sale

Where each payment option fits, how the accounting works, and how to set it up

Customers in Saudi Arabia expect to pay the way they prefer: mada, Apple Pay, credit cards, or in installments with Tamara or Tabby. Offering these options increases sales, but only if the payments are recorded correctly in your system. This guide explains where each option fits in Odoo and how the accounting works.

Where each option fits

  • HyperPay is a payment gateway: customers pay by mada, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and other methods, and the amount is settled to your bank account.
  • Tamara and Tabby are buy-now-pay-later services: the customer splits the amount into installments, while you receive the full amount from the provider, minus its fees.
  • mada terminals, such as those from Geidea and NearPay, take card payments in the store and can be connected to the Odoo point of sale.

Three places to accept payment

  • Online checkout: in an Odoo eCommerce store, the options appear at checkout, and the order is confirmed automatically once the payment succeeds.
  • Payment links on invoices: send the customer a quotation or an invoice with a link to pay online. This suits business sales and services.
  • The point of sale: card payments on a terminal connected to the POS, and installments through the provider's in-store flow, each recorded against the right payment method.

How the accounting works

The most common mistake is recording a Tamara or Tabby sale as if the customer had paid you directly. In reality, the customer owes the provider, and the provider owes you. The right setup is:

  • A separate journal or payment method for each provider, so its balance shows what it owes you.
  • Provider fees recorded as an expense when the settlement arrives, instead of being lost in the difference.
  • Each settlement matched with the orders it covers, so unsettled orders are easy to see.
  • Refunds and returns processed through the same provider and linked to a credit note.

Setup steps

  1. Open merchant accounts with the providers you choose and get the test (sandbox) keys.
  2. Configure the payment providers and methods in Odoo for the website, invoices and the point of sale.
  3. Test in the sandbox: a successful payment, a failed payment, a partial refund and a full refund.
  4. Set up the journals and reconciliation rules for each provider.
  5. Switch to the live keys and follow up the first settlements with your accountant.

From our experience

We have built payment connectors for Odoo, including Tamara, Tabby, HyperPay and SADAD, and published them on the Odoo App Store. We have also connected mada terminals from Geidea and NearPay to the point of sale. What we care about most is that every riyal paid appears in the right place in your accounts.
